Viva Kerala was founded in 2004 by a group of local businessmen who felt the need for representation of Kerala state in the country’s top football league. Kerala is located on the Malabar Coast in the south-west of India.

The name Viva Kerala was chosen after a competition and the club aimed to work their way through the various levels of Indian football with the goal of becoming one of the top clubs in India. They started by building a club of young, local players and after a few years they won their way through to the I-League in 2007-08.

They suffered a set-back a year later when they were relegated back to the second division, however they were invited back to the I-League for the 2009-10 season. The club just avoided relegation again in the 2010-11 season.
