The North Borneo Football Club changed its name to Sabah Amateur Football Association in 1977 and became known as one of the most competitive teams, especially once professional football was introduced in Malaysia.

Sabah, and football in Malaysia, was rocked in the early 90s by the match-fixing scandal that almost saw the end of Sabah and football in Malaysia. It saw their most famous player, Matlan Marjan, suspended for life by FIFA.

When the Super League was introduced in the early 2000s, Sabah struggled to compete and were relegated back to the Premier League. In 2010, under the guidance of Australian Gary Phillips, the club finally won promotion back to the Super League for the 2011 season.
