HISTORY
Sangmu FC was founded in January 1984 as the football side for the Korea Armed Forces Athletic Corps.  They joined the K-League in 1985, although lasted only one year before dropping out.

After establishing a base in the city of Gwangju, the club re-entered the K-League in 2003 under the name of Gwangju Sangmu Bulsajo. The club is made up of young Korean footballers serving their compulsory two-year military duty. Fifteen players sign up at the start of each year and spend two years and Sangmu before returning to their previous club. The club are not allowed to sign foreign players.

At the end of the 2010 K-League season Sangmu ended their affiliation with Gwangju and began the search for a new home-base for the team. The club eventually settled on Sangju and were renamed Sangju Sangmu Phoenix.
