HISTORY
Daejeon Citizen was founded in 1997 as the first community club in Korea. Whilst the club didn’t issue shares until 2005, they were recognised as a community-club because they weren’t owned by a major corporation. This was very symbolic as it meant the club belonged to the community rather than a specific company.

The club was hit hard by the IMF crisis in the late 90′s when four of the clubs shareholders - Dong-A Construction, DongYang Department Store and Chung-cheong Bank going bankrupt, leaving Kyeryong Construction as the sole remaining board member.

A few years later though, Kyeryong announced they were leaving the club Board, which almost lead to the demise of the club before Daejeon City Hall agreed to give financial support to the club.

The club’s first major piece of silverware would arrive in 2001 when it won the Korean FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Pohang Steelers courtesy of a Kim Eun-jung goal.
