In 2007, Chinese millionaire Zhu Jun, the owner of Shenhua’s local rival Shanghai United FC, bought a majority share of Shenhua. He merged the two clubs together, and in 2008 the club was renamed as Shanghai Shenhua United.

The word “Shenhua” means Flower of Shanghai. Shenhua has one of the most famous ultras fan groups in China, the “Blue Devils”.
