HISTORY
Despite finishing Runner-Up in 1981 and 1982 in the National Football League, Shandong was a inconspicuous team in Chinese League. They finished third in Division 2 in 1992, meaning they won their chance to play in the new professional league (CSL) starting in 1994.

Shandong became a professional club in 1993 and was named Shandong Taishan. Taishan, or Mountain Tai in English, is a mountain of historical and cultural significance located north of the city of Tai’an, in Shandong province.

In 1998, Shandong Luneng Group, a subgroup of SEPC Group (Shandong Electric Power Coperation), bought the club and renamed it as its current name. With huge investment and a lot of development work, the club achieved great success and is now considered as the powerhouse club in China.
