ACQ Preview: Iraq v Indonesia

By Eric Noveanto

The opening match of 2015 Asian Cup qualifying round of Group C between Indonesia and Iraq will be held at Al Rashid stadium, Dubai, UAE on February 6.

Merah Putih will be forced to improve their performance following a heavy-loss 5-0 against the host Jordan on January 31.

Lack of communication and concentration in the defense line is the main problem that has to be solved by the team coach, Nil Maizar. The arrival of Persipura’s Stevi Bonsapia will be a precious addition for Team Garuda for that very reason.

The attacking side who failed to find the net in the last two competitive matches, have also become a major concern for the former Semen Padang head tactician. He decided to recall Irfan Bachdim, who recently signed a contract with Thai outfit Chonburi into the 23-man team roster.

“Against Iraq, we will try to minimise the basic mistakes. It is a must, we don’t want to concede many goals.” – Assistant coach Fabio Oliveira.

Meanwhile in Iraq’s preparations, The Lions of Mesopotamia are confident they can snatch a valuable three-point over Indonesia, after recording a 3-0 win in an international friendly over Malaysia on February 1.

Noor Sabri, Ali Rehema, Khaldoun Ibrahim and Younis Mahmoud remain ever-present in Hakeem Shakir’s plans. While UAE-based midfielder Karrar Jassim has been axed from the team due to internal issue.

“Our national team will also continue to prepare after the comfortable victory over Malaysia. For us, technically, the style of play between Indonesia and Malaysia are not much different. So our team know what to do on Wednesday.” – The deputy IFA head Abdul Khaliq Massoud.
