Draw set for AFF Suzuki Cup

The draw for the 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup, the ninth edition of the tournament to be co-hosted by Thailand and Malaysia, was held this afternoon in Bangkok, with teams learning the fate that awaits them in November and December.

Six sides automatically qualify for the event - Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore and the Philippines - while a further five - Cambodia, Brunei, Timor Leste, Myanmar and Laos - will participate in a round robin qualifying tournament in Myanmar in October. The winner and runner-up from that qualifying tournament will go into the main draw for the AFF Suzuki Cup.

Malaysia, as defending champions and co-hosts, were dealt a tough blow landing themselves in Group B alongside Indonesia, Singapore and the runner-up from qualifying. With only the top two moving on to the Semi-Finals one country will be left disappointed.

Fellow co-hosts Thailand would be feeling slightly happier about things after drawing Vietnam, the Philippines and the winner of qualifying. While Vietnam and the Philippines are no pushovers, it presents a slightly easier challenge than that presented by the more noted heavyweights of ASEAN.

The two groups are as follows:

Thailand Malaysia
Vietnam Indonesia
Philippines Singapore
Winner Qualifying Runner-Up Qualifying

The official match schedule can be found on the official AFF Suzuki Cup website.

We will have the reactions to the draw from our correspondents in a number of the participating countries on the site over the next few days.
