Damash Gilan was founded in 1983 as Esteghlal Rasht. The club was heavily supported by the city of Rasht. They mostly competed in the lower divisions of Iranian football but tin 2001, they finished 9th in their 1st IPL season. The next season, Esteghlal Rasht, managed by Nasser Hejazi, finished in 13th place, which led to their relegation. The following season they were bought by Pegah Dairy CO. The team’s new name became Pegah Gilan.
Pegah fans had expected a very turbulant road ahead of them after many of their 1st team players left to IPL clubs since Pegah (Esteghlal Rasht the previous season) was now playing in the azadegan league. However, the team managed to finish 2nd in the Azadegan league and were promoted to the IPL again. Despite having a respectable amount of success over the next two seasons by surviving, the team was again relegated in the 2004-05 season by finishing 16th in the IPL table. After another 2 seasons in the Azadegan league, Pegah was promoted back into the IPL.
Pegah terminated their sports activities in October of 2008 due to financial difficulties. Damash, a mineral water company, bought took over the their lisence. He renamed the club to Damash Gilan. Again, Damash’s inconsistency continued as they were again relegated in 2008-09, but promotoed again in 2010-11. In the hopes of gaining some stability, the club bought many big players such as former Hamburg midfielder Mehdi Mahdavikia, Orestes Junior Alves, Mohammad Mohammadi, Emil Nol, and Mohammad Gholami.
