HISTORY
The ‘Phoenix’ were founded in 2007 after the withdrawal of the New Zealand Knights from the A-League.

Though the club had little success in their first two seasons, finishing last and third last, the 2009-10 season saw them make history as the first New Zealand team to make the finals of an Australian football competition. Though Sydney FC eliminated them in the preliminary final, Wellington was rewarded for its success by having the club’s short-term future secured for at least the next five years.

They made the finals again in the 2010-11 season after finishing in sixth position, but were knocked out by Adelaide United. The club’s only manager to date, Ricki Herbert, has also led the New Zealand national side through the 2010 World Cup undefeated.
