HISTORY
Newcastle United was founded in 2000 and took part in the last few years of the old National State League. The club was renamed as Newcastle United Jets in order to take place in the A-League, and had great success in the early years of the competition.

A Grand Final berth in 2007-08 against their main rivals, the Central Coast Mariners, followed two semi-final appearances. The ‘Jets’ beat the Mariners 1-0 to claim their first A-League championship.

The club has struggled since, both on and off the field. They made the Round of 16 in the 2009 AFC Champions League, but have made the finals just once in the past three seasons of the A-League.

The club was sold to mining magnate Nathan Tinkler after struggling financially in the lead-up to the 2010-11 season. Tinkler has seemingly secured the short-term future of the club by agreeing to provide financial support until at least 2020 and undergoing a complete overhaul of the operational and football departments at the club.
