Founded in 2004, the ‘Victory’ is the only A-League club to have done the Premiership-Championship double, after winning both in the 2006-07 season.
After a disappointing first season, in which they finished in seventh position, 2006-07 brought great success, which culminated in a 6-0 Grand Final win over Adelaide United. The hero of that day, and the club, was Archie Thompson who scored an amazing five goals in the Grand Final.
Despite failing to make it beyond the group stages in the AFC Champions League the following year, the club won their second Grand Final in 2008-09 by beating Adelaide United again, this time 1-0 and in the process became the first club to win two Championships.
Another Grand Final followed in 2009-10, but this time they lost to their great rivals, Sydney FC. Apart from Sydney, the club also has a strong rivalry with Adelaide United and Melbourne Heart.
A relatively poor season in 2010-11 ended with a fifth place finish and the departure of long-serving manager, Ernie Merrick, who was sacked after a horror start to their AFC Champions League campaign in which they lost 5-1 to Gamba Osaka.
Melbourne Victory is often regarded as the biggest club in the A-League courtesy of its large supporter base, which has seen crowds as big as 50,000 attend regular season games.
